The Cheap Cottages Exhibition 1905 - This helped put Letchworth on the map Industrial Heritage This next page lists some of the businesses that have been and in several cases still are based in Letchworth , its a mess, and I'm still working on getting and checking a lot of dates and details. At the moment it is only meant to give you an idea of the diversity and scale of some of the companies that came to Letchworth. Letchworth had the expected light/clean industry: printers, weavers, light engineering etc. But you dont expect to find Massive Heavy steel founders and engineers, Car and Heavy vehicle manufacturers, Early Computing Companies, Major gearbox manufacturers and surprising businesses such as parachute and corset manufacturers. Letchworth is still home to many diverse and inovative companies that operate Locally, Nationally and Internationally, details of these can be found elsewhere on the site. The importance of Letchworth in the World Wars is also largely understated. K&L, Morse Chain, British Tabulator, Irvin Airchutes, Shelvoke and Drewery, and Spirella, played important roles to name just a few. Some contributed hardware and munitions, some helped with equipment for intelligence work. The work at British Tabulator on code breaking machines apparently may have shortened WW2 by a couple of years, if you want to know or see more follow the links. There are few links on this page at the moment but I recommend the ones for British Tabulator, Irvin and Dents each has pictures and details. |
